This resort is about a mile from Lake Okeechobee, second largest fresh-water lake in the United States. Known as the "bass fishing capital," the lake is rated the best in the nation with a catch success rate twice the national standard. At 15 feet above sea level, Lake Okeechobee is a 750-square-mile fresh-water lake filled with bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish. It was named by the Seminole Indians and means "Big Water."
There is a hiking trail around the top of the levy of Lake Okeechobee which is part of the Florida Scenic Trail. Access to Lake Okeechobee is readily available as marinas, boat ramps, and bait and tackle shops abound in towns surrounding the lake. An hour's drive east to the coast will take you to many of the areas famous landmarks like the Norton Gallery of Art and the restored private home of railroad magnate Henry Flager plus the many shopping malls in the area.
The west coast, also about an hour's drive, offers the estates of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford who were once seduced by the area and elected it as a winter retreat. Clewiston offers its own landmarks like the Historical Clewiston Inn which was built in 1938 and is listed in the U.S. Register of Historical Landmarks. Inside is the renowned "Everglades Lounge" with walls that are an oil painting of the Everglades. Close by are the Clewiston Museum, Roland Martin's Marina, the Clewiston Golf Course, a library, and village shopping. In the neighboring town of Belle Glade, the Dolly Hand Cultural Arts Center offers a variety of shows year round.
Seasonal activities include the Hendry County Fair held each year in mid-March, and the Sugar Festival in April. Both events offer lots of activities and crafts.
